The University of Kansas is a charter participant in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. STARS was developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) in partnership with the higher education community.

In 2012 the University received a bronze rating for current sustainability efforts.  The University strives each year to increase sustainability and eventually obtain silver, gold, and platinum ratings. View the most recent STARS Report.

Kansas Board of Regents Sustainability Report

KU submits an annual sustainability report to the Kansas Board of Regents at the November meeting. The first report in 2009 provides a baseline status, with new accomplishments reported in subsequent years. Reports address the implementation principles outlined in the Kansas Board of Regents Sustainability Policy, which is published in the KBOR Policy and Procedures Manual.

Sierra Club "Cool Schools"

KU has been included on the Sierra Club's list of "Cool Schools" for multiple years.  The "Cool Schools" ranking highlights schools who are committed to sustainability in all facets of the school including research, teaching, operations, and student life. Schools are assessed for the ranking based upon the information they provide to the AASHE STARS program and a few other factors.  KU was most recently ranked the 42 "Coolest School." Sustainable Endowments Institute: College Sustainability Report Cards

Since 2007, the University of Kansas has been included in the Sustainable Endowments Institute's College Sustainability Report Card. The Report Card is an independent evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability activities that provides a letter grade for colleges and universities based on surveys data on general campus issues, dining services, endowments, and student organizations. As of 2012, the College Sustainability Report Card has been suspended.
