Student Life

Through education and engagement, the University of Kansas is committed to a culture that empowers the student body to maintain a socially, environmentally, and economically responsible lifestyle on campus and in the greater community.

Goal 1:  Foster the development of an engaged, sustainability literate citizenry

Objective 1.1:  Expand on current sustainability initiatives within recruitment of students and new student orientation

Integrating sustainability into recruitment and the new student experience will demonstrate to incoming students that sustainability is an important part of life at KU.

Strategy 1.1.1: Work with Admissions to provide information about KU's sustainability mission and efforts in marketing materials, including campus tours, to potential students.

Strategy 1.1.2: Continue to seek opportunities to work with First-Year Experience to introduce sustainability initiatives and practices as part of new student orientation and Hawk Week programming

Objective 1.2:  Engage student organizations in campus sustainability efforts

If students are energetic and engaged in sustainability efforts, change will come more easily to faculty, staff and administrators

Strategy 1.2.1: Partner with campus departments that oversee student organizations and other identified groups of students to provide resources for student leaders engaged in, or seeking engagement in, sustainability issues on campus and in the community.

Strategy 1.2.2: Promote best practices for student events by elevating awareness of sustainability practices and available resources.

Objective 1.3:  Strengthen sustainable living principles in residence life and Greek housing

By adopting more sustainable lifestyles, students can help reduce negative impacts of campus life and carry important habits with them when they leave KU.

Strategy 1.3.1: Establish relationships with the councils of all campus living facilities and Greek Life in order to regularly share resources and support for sustainability initiatives and best practices.

Strategy 1.3.2: Work with KU Student Housing to provide Resident Advisors with resources for sustainability-focused programming for their residents.

Strategy 1.3.3: Develop and distribute a best practice and self-audit guide for use by Greek Houses and Scholarship Halls that wish to implement sustainability practices in their residence.

Objective 1.4:  Provide coordinated opportunities to participate in service and promote social equity throughout the KU experience.

Providing students with the awareness to become engaged and inclusive citizens will help create the equitable campus community the University strives to be.

Strategy 1.4.1: Continue to strengthen relationships with campus partners in all areas of student life to help illustrate and convey the social dynamics of sustainability, such as civic engagement, service, social justice and equity.

Strategy 1.4.2: Establish and maintain marketing and social media partners to co-promote cross-disciplinary events, activities, and opportunities related to sustainability and social equity.

Coronavirus Update

KU Recycling and KU Surplus have resumed services. As part of our efforts to reduce an on-campus presence and promote social distancing, we will continue to limit special collections that are not mission critical. For updated information on KU's response to COVID-19, visit protect.ku.edu
